[ENG] In the frame of the festival IN-SONORA10, the german artist Gabi Schaffner is in residency at Medialab Prado with her project  ”Datscha-Radio: Radio Gardening in Madrid".

Datscha-Radio is an itinerant project and committed to the places where it is developed, organized and dynamized by Gabi Schaffner in collaboration with local and digital networks of radio artists, sound artists, scientists and makers. Datscha Radio uses the garden as a metaphor and as a way to organize different cultural knowledge and constructions about the concept of "growth". The artist herself Gabi Schaffner makes an invitation to collaborate in her project.

Every gardener knows: Any garden belongs as much to the sphere of imagination as it belongs to reality. As a sound art–based field for ideas, mapping and communication the “radio garden” of Datscha Radio will sprout a new offshoot at the Medialab Prado and invites all interested parties to join for a series of radio shows about the garden and gardening in its widest sense.

Datscha Radio is a mobile, site-responsive transmission project in collaboration with local and digital networks of sound (and radio) artists, gardeners, scientists and DIY people. Datscha Radio uses “the garden” as both metaphor and method to organise knowledge and different (cultural) concepts of growth. Additionally to the envisaged broadcasts an “adopt a plant” office will open its haven for unwanted plants to find new parents for them. The stories of why the plant had to go (or vice versa) will also play a part in the shows… as well as in the upcoming blog.”

[ENG] Datscha Radio’s vision of the garden as a living image of communication and growth has been carried southward to Central Spain. In Madrid it sprout an off-shoot at the garden of Esta Es Una Plaza on the 23rd of March. Broadcast on stream from Datscha Radio site and on-site via micro transmitter on 103.7FM.

  • crear a documentación: texto y sonido

Datscha Radio Madrid happens on invitation of Medialab Prado and the IN-SONORA artist collective. The aim of the residency is the collaborative work with Madrid sound and performance artists with a focus on "radio gardening“ on practically all levels:

  • gather field recordings and interviews in and about the Madrid urban gardens (Huertos Urbanos comunitarios)
  •  inclusion of the local communities
  • create an artist’s collective from scratch to make radio
  • investigate the sound spheres of the historical gardens and parks of Madrid
  • exchange in languages, plants and knowledgement
  • stage a 6 hour radio garden event
  • create documentation: text and sound

With being the first time for Datscha Radio to travel abroad, some of its perspective shift – from being locally (or at least nationally) anchored to become a nomadic entity depending on the support and openness of its hosting country.

Secret gardens
MUSEUM OF MUNICIPAL PRESS BOOK ARTS

Calle Concepcion Jeronima 15, just in between the two central squares of Jacinto Benavente and Tirso de Molina, near by Puerta del Sol.

[ENG] For more than one hundred and fifty years, the Municipal Press provided the City of Madrid with forms and books for the administrative needs of a large city. Today it has become the depository and dynamo of this culture heritage.
The historic building, a beautiful example of rationalist industrial architecture, which housed the Press (1933-1986) is the container of a tangible and intangible heritage on the form of recovered historical items, to be seen in the permanent collection, spaces where the traditional arts and books survive: thypographic printing graphic arts, engraving techniques and artistic binding. Later on opens the documentation centre of the Municipal Press, as well as workshops for direct knowledge of graphic arts techniques, and monographic exhibitions to show historical artistic pieces and contemporary graphic arts.
Here, inside de museum Chus, the ordinance woman, built and created a beuatiful garden, filled with plants and flowers, just by her own. She´s also the one that takes care of the museum and this amazing garden. There´s tables and chairs, and lights all is growing in a place where knowledgement is heritage.

We made her an interview about the creation of this hidden garden.

[ENG] A soft frequency hum permeates the air, there are plants, arduinos, micro sensors measuring the moisture in the pots, a dead deco cabbage plant, a very healthy looking aloe and a pot of the "bad mother plant“. We agree that Grünlilie (German common name) is a nice word for it.
